Ottawa’s tree stock is not uniform. The west-end subdivisions were planted in waves, so Kanata and Barrhaven carry streets of identical-age maple and ash coming due for the same work at the same time. Older Nepean, Westboro and Bells Corners lots hold genuinely large mature trees sitting close to houses, where rigging matters more than horsepower. East of the river, Orleans and Navan take the wind off the Ottawa River and generate most of our storm calls. Out in Greely, Osgoode and Metcalfe there is room to drop a tree whole, and the day is mostly chipping.
Emerald Ash Borer changed the job across all of it. A great deal of the removal work in Ottawa now is standing dead ash, which is brittle, unpredictable, and exactly the sort of tree that should not be taken down by a homeowner with a rented saw.
Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law, in force since 1 January 2021, requires a permit to remove most trees on private property, and a permit application needs an arborist report from a certified arborist. The by-law applies city-wide, so the rules in Kanata are the rules in Orleans. There are only two real exceptions: a tree that is dead or hazardous and an immediate threat to public safety, and ash infested with Emerald Ash Borer. We complete arborist reports as part of the job.
