Trees in Metcalfe
Metcalfe's rural lots mean large removals and a lot of brush, so chipping and cleanup are most of the day.
Whatever the tree is doing, the first step is the same: we come out, look at it, and tell you honestly whether it needs pruning, removal, or nothing at all. We do not top trees, and we will say when a tree is worth keeping.
Tree rules in Metcalfe
Most of Metcalfe is in the City of Ottawa’s rural area. There, the Tree Protection By-law protects City-owned trees, such as those in the road allowance, but a private tree on your own land does not need a City permit to come down (source).
Anywhere in Ottawa, pruning a private tree needs no permit, a dead or hazardous tree that is an immediate threat to safety can be removed without one (photograph it first), and so can an ash infested with emerald ash borer. To check which rules cover your exact property, look it up on geoOttawa under Forestry.
Street trees in Metcalfe
The City of Ottawa’s tree inventory lists 381 City-owned trees within 1.5 km of the centre of Metcalfe (source). The most common are white spruce, Scots pine and silver maple. 89 of them are already 30 cm or more across, and 22 are ash, the species emerald ash borer attacks.
Those are the City’s trees, and the by-law protects every one of them. A tree on your own side of the line is yours to look after, and that is the work we do.
Metcalfe history that matters for trees
Before the 2001 amalgamation, Metcalfe was part of Osgoode Township (source).
