Trees in Vanier
Vanier's small urban lots mean removals with almost no drop zone, taken down in sections over fences and wires.
Whatever the tree is doing, the first step is the same: we come out, look at it, and tell you honestly whether it needs pruning, removal, or nothing at all. We do not top trees, and we will say when a tree is worth keeping.
Tree rules in Vanier
Vanier is inside the City of Ottawa’s urban area. There, a private tree 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height, on a lot of one hectare or less, is a “distinctive tree” and needs a City permit before it comes down (source). The permit application is supported by an arborist report, and we will tell you first whether your tree needs one at all.
Anywhere in Ottawa, pruning a private tree needs no permit, a dead or hazardous tree that is an immediate threat to safety can be removed without one (photograph it first), and so can an ash infested with emerald ash borer. To check which rules cover your exact property, look it up on geoOttawa under Forestry.
Street trees in Vanier
The City of Ottawa’s tree inventory lists 14,298 City-owned trees within 2 km of the centre of Vanier (source). The most common are sugar maple, Norway maple and red maple. 5,871 of them are already 30 cm or more across, and 215 are ash, the species emerald ash borer attacks.
Those are the City’s trees, and the by-law protects every one of them. A tree on your own side of the line is yours to look after, and that is the work we do.
Vanier history that matters for trees
Before the 2001 amalgamation, Vanier was part of the City of Vanier (source).
