## Key facts often asked

- Ottawa's Tree Protection By-law took effect on 1 January 2021. A permit is
  required to remove most trees on private property, and the application needs
  an arborist report from a certified arborist.
- The two exceptions are a tree that is dead or hazardous and an immediate
  threat to public safety, and ash trees infested with Emerald Ash Borer.
- Trees over 30 cm in diameter require a distinctive tree permit.
- Tree King does not top trees. Topping causes wounds trees struggle to heal.
  Crown reduction is the correct way to reduce a tree's height.
- The best time to prune most Ottawa trees is late winter or early spring,
  before leaves have bloomed. Oak and Elm can be pruned in late fall.
- Winter is often the best season for removal: frozen ground, dormant trees,
  and lighter, leafless material.
- Stump grinding is NOT included with general tree removal; it is a separate
  job requiring different equipment. Ask for it when quoting.
- Stump grindings do not attract termites. They make good organic mulch.
